Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.

Let’s kick things off with a local legend: Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. in downtown Phoenix has racked up numerous awards for their innovative craft beers inspired by the beautiful Arizona outdoors. Their flagship Paiute Pale Ale and easy-drinking Bridle Trail Brown are must-tries, perfectly balancing malt and citrusy hops for optimal refreshment in the desert heat. Don’t miss specialties like their Superstition Meadery mead or Ponderosa IPA either. With a laidback vibe and board game library, the Wilderness tasting room is an ideal spot to soak up Phoenix’s funky Roosevelt Row arts district.

The Shop Beer Co.

This family-friendly hangout and food truck court in East Valley serves up equal parts old-school fun and delicious brews. While the kids play vintage video games or enormous Connect Four, adults can sample from a rotating tap list celebrating unique Southwest flavors like Calle Netra stout with mesquite-smoked agave or the bright, chili-infused Luche Libre lager. Even better, everything is brewed right in the adjoining warehouse that’s viewable from the bar and patio. Catching a glimpse of the brewing process and chatting with knowledgeable staff makes for an immersive, educational experience.

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. Gilbert

With the soaring popularity of their original Phoenix location, it was only a matter of time before AZ Wilderness expanded their reach across the Valley. This massive two-acre Gilbert compound is a true desert oasis boasting shady misters, vibrant murals, social lawn games, and food trucks galore. Of course, the main draw remains Wilderness’ award-winning beers, including a new Gilbert-exclusive Grapefruit Sunrise ale and constant rotation of special releases and R&D batches. Their copious indoor/outdoor space and family-friendly environment make it an awesome group hangout spot.

State 48 Brewery

Don’t let State 48’s unassuming strip-mall locale fool you: owner/brewmaster Zac’s passion for American ingredients radiates through every small-batch pour. Flagship brews like the Trail Rye’D pale ale and local-wheat Barvarian Deconstructed Hefeweizen showcase grains grown right here in Arizona, while rotating seasonals let fruits, veggies, and herbs from local farms shine. You may spot an old-school school bus from time to time, which State 48 uses for brewery tours as well as delivery around downtown Phoenix. Insider tip: leave room for their heavenly beer pretzels!

Simple Machine Brewery and Cidery

North Phoenix’s laid-back Simple Machine has become a haven for locals thirsty for something a little…different. While their stellar German-style craft beer selection alone is worth a visit, the real draw is their unique house-made ciders. From the flagship Apple Pie to imaginative infusions like Blueberry Lavender or Pineapple Habanero, they offer ciders to satisfy any craving. A rotation of slushie cider cocktails provides the perfect way to combat that dry desert heat too. Soak up the vibrant, relaxed ambiance of their dog-friendly patio on the weekend…if you can snag a spot!

O.H.S.O. Brewery

Sure, O.H.S.O. is a state-wide microbrewery chain taking over Arizona with seven locations (and counting). But despite the rapid expansion, their dedication to fresh craft brews and inventive cuisine at each neighborhood brewpub never falters. Scottsdale’s original location remains the heart of operation, with a dazzling 120-tap trailer park handlebar slinging everything from flagship Grapefruit Sah-Crah-Licious IPA to experimental small-batch brews. The upscale gastropub grub seamlessly transitions from hangover Navajo tacos in the morning to short rib chili cheese fries and decadent raspberry bread pudding at night. Take a growler to go if you can’t stay all day!

Huss Brewing Company

Huss Brewing took their housemade Papago Orange cider nationwide with pandemic-fueled seltzer sales, but locals know they’re far more than a one-hit-wonder. Beloved year-round staples like the Dr. Pineapple fruited wheat ale and Scottsdale Blonde keep the Uptown taproom hopping. Meanwhile, a steady rotation of fun, creative seasonals (PB&J Brown? Don’t mind if I do!) keep things exciting for regulars. Huss’ commitment to providing a stellar experience extends to their superbly knowledgeable staff and low-key family-friendly atmosphere anchored by the charming beer garden and rootop patio.

But where Wren House truly shines is their ever-rotating list of imaginative limited releases and canned specials. One week you might have a fresh Guava Kettle Sour or Tres Leches Ale, the next you’re sampling juicy Mango Gose or Imperial Root Beer Float stouts. Good luck picking a favorite!
